How to assist someone visually impaired

Have you ever seen someone who was visually impaired needing help to get around, but were too afraid to offer your help because you didn’t know how to?

Vision Health Volunteers presents you with SIGHTED GUIDE TRAINING, a FREE event conducted by the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB). Learn how to guide someone who is blind or visually impaired! Once you complete your training, you are qualified to volunteer as a Vision Mate, with the CNIB office volunteers and other CNIB programs.

Many people with vision loss feel comfortable travelling independently, but there may still be times when being guided by a sighted person comes in handy. In this session, you’ll be introduced to the “sighted guide technique”, a safer and more comfortable way to guide someone who’s blind or partially sighted while walking.

The agenda will go as follows:
1: Introduction to Sighted Guide and white canes
2: Basic Sighted Guide Techniques
3: Going Through Doors
4: Seating
5: Practice!
6: Other Useful Guiding Tips
